There's only so much satellite and aerial data can do.Įveryone (Apple, Google, Waze, OpenStreetMaps, et Al) are all recent players to the navigation market.nd they have been doing well. It then all has to be merged into existing maps, differences resolved, and assurances made that the data is correct and won't sent someone careening into a lake. Even with machine learning and AI, there still isn't any more effective shortcut to updating street data than putting someone in a LiDAR equipped vehicle and having them drive to capture new data. It honestly doesn't matter if geospatial data is "cheap" but as is pointed out, it costs money to keep it all updated and "true". Some quick comments as I used to work for HERE (and have worked in GIS in some capacity for over 25 years), a Tom Tom/Garmin competitor and provided data to the likes of Audi, Mercedes, BMW, FedEx, Subaru, Toyota, Pioneer, Alpine and lots of other autonomous vehicles and supply chain management firms.Īnd that is correct: the data is licenced to the OEM and any intermediate firm that perhaps makes the interface for said OEM. This pricing schema has been going on in the navigation market for at least 20 years (many may remember when navigation data was limited to a region or lived on a DVD you had to insert when you needed navigation). Also not to be rude, but is this your first car or Mazda?

Even with an extended warranty, I still have to pay to update the Nav system.Ĭame here to say this. Believe me I know, my Jeep wrangler was this much and I refuse to pay the cost for the update. It wasn't too long ago that these dedicated Nav systems were $1k options and EVERY update was $150.

That is where the cost comes from, you can't just look at the material cost of the SD card itself. I get what you are saying it only costs a few bucks to make an SD card, but the information on that card takes time and money to create and continue to update. Get off track once you are without cell coverage and you are SOL. This works as long as you think about it.

Yes I know that if you plan ahead with Google Maps you can download your trip ahead of time. If you don't ever travel in these rural areas then stick with your cellphone, otherwise the navigation system is worth it.

I am going to say though that if you are someone that travels out in the boonies where cell coverage is spotty at best, having a dedicated navigation system with offline data is worth the cost. I use Google Maps or Waze the majority of the time and it would be great to get that info on the HUD.
